Description

“Rated X – And Then Came Rated X,” released in 1990 under Tandem Records, is a notable album from the rap group Rated X, based out of East Palo Alto. This CD album exemplifies the diverse and dynamic nature of hip-hop music from the early ’90s, showcasing the group’s unique style and lyrical skill.

The album opens with “Rated X Intro (Eh Ah),” a brief 1:52 track that sets the tone for the album with its energetic delivery and catchy beats. “Swift Lift Vocalist” follows, featuring co-writing and performance by Hassan Armstrong and edited by Tony Valera, offering a blend of sharp lyricism and smooth flow over a compelling beat.

“The Ruff Stuff” and “Check 1,2” continue to display Rated X’s talent for creating engaging hip-hop music, with tight rhythms and clever wordplay. “Freestyle,” featuring Hassan, is a short but impactful track that showcases the group’s improvisational skills.

“Rated X Is 2” and the brief interlude “Are You Ready” lead into “Movin’ On Up,” a track co-produced by LA Mel and also edited by Tony Valera, which likely combines groovy beats with thoughtful lyrics. “Be Cool To Your Girl” and “Law Of Groovity” further demonstrate Rated X’s ability to blend meaningful messages with infectious rhythms.

“Make Some Noise” and “Cool Breeze Of All MC’s,” the latter being one of the longer tracks on the album, provide a deeper exploration of the group’s thematic range and musical versatility. The album concludes with “Pump It,” a high-energy track that encapsulates the group’s style.

The album was manufactured by Tandem Records, with cover design by R. Nevarez, editing by Cameron Paul, and executive production by Cameron Paul and Haim Zion. Management was handled by David Bickerstaff, mixing and engineering by Vontallio Carter, and photography by Bob Jacobs. Marcus McKinley served as the primary producer and writer, with turntables managed by Tyrone Tinsley.

Rated X, consisting of members Cap’N Crunch (aka C-Funk), Cool Breeze, and D.J. Ajax, brought a distinct flavor to the rap scene, mixing traditional hip-hop elements with their unique artistic expressions. “And Then Came Rated X” stands as a testament to their creativity and a significant contribution to the diverse tapestry of East Palo Alto’s hip-hop scene.
