Description

“Dangerous Dame – I Got What You Want” is a standout hip-hop album by Damon D. Edwards, known professionally as Dangerous Dame, a pioneering rap artist from Oakland, California. Released in 1990 under the Atlantic label, this CD album is a significant entry in the hip-hop genre, particularly noted for its gangsta style.

The album opens with “Freestyle Shortbreak,” a brief yet impactful track that sets the tone for the album’s vibrant and energetic style. “Let Myself Go,” co-produced by Michael Chambers, follows with a runtime of 4:05, showcasing Dangerous Dame’s lyrical flow and storytelling skills.

“City Of Macks” and the title track “I Got What You Want” keep the momentum going with their catchy beats and engaging lyrics. “Far From A Regular” and “Troublematic Button” delve deeper into the artist’s experiences and perspectives, with the latter track extending to 5:17.

“One Way Up” and “I Call Your Name” offer a blend of introspective lyrics and smooth rhythms. “Subject Of Importance” and “Lil Rob Is In My Heart” continue to highlight Dangerous Dame’s ability to craft songs that resonate with the listener on both a musical and emotional level.

The album concludes with “The Powers That Be,” a track that encapsulates the themes and styles presented throughout the album.

The album was mastered at Atlantic Studios and pressed by Rainbow Records and Sono Press, North Carolina. It was published by William La Ron Davis Publishing Co. The art direction was handled by Bob Defrin, with design by Lynn Kowalewski and photography by David Roth. The album also features engineering work by Kevin Jones and Mood Indigo Productions.

Dangerous Dame’s role as the executive producer, alongside his work as producer, writer, arranger, and mixer, particularly in collaboration with Tracey Ellington on keyboards and instruments, demonstrates his multifaceted talent. Additionally, chorus contributions by Sugar Ray Howell on selected tracks add to the album’s depth.

“I Got What You Want” is not just an album but a landmark in the history of Bay Area hip-hop, marking Dangerous Dame as one of the first rap artists from the region to sign with a major record label. His passing on January 25th, 2023, marks the end of an era, but his music continues to influence and inspire.
