Description

“Gangsta Knowledge” by Hugh E.M.C. & DJ-X1, released in 1990 under Soul Sonic Records, is a notable cassette that showcases the talents of two prominent figures in the hip-hop scene from Fillmore, San Francisco, California. This release is a testament to their contributions to the genre, particularly in the gangsta and conscious rap styles.

The cassette is divided into two sides, each highlighting different aspects of their musical prowess. The “Gangsta Side” features tracks like “Gangsta-Matic,” “H-Nigga Groove,” and “It’s The Game,” each offering a glimpse into the gritty, streetwise narratives that define gangsta rap. These tracks, with their hard-hitting beats and raw lyrical content, encapsulate the essence of the early ’90s hip-hop scene.

On the “Knowledge Side,” tracks like “My Poetry” and “Let The Beat Flow” present a different dimension of their artistry. “My Poetry” extends to 6:48, showcasing Hugh E.M.C.’s skills as a lyricist and storyteller, while “Let The Beat Flow” offers a rhythmic and lyrical exploration over 5:50.

The artwork for the cassette was created by Bridget Maria Goodman for Poesy Productionz, adding a visual element to the release. The project was mixed by Dale Ervingham, T.C., and Tracy Ellington, ensuring a high-quality sound. The photography was done by Philip Stribling.

Hugh E.M.C., real name Hugh E. Gregory, and DJ-X1, real name Tommy Jefferson (also known as DJ Rock and Tommy Jefferson), both produced and mixed the tracks. Hugh E.M.C. also contributed to the writing and arrangement of the songs. This release was dedicated to Daniel Harold Jefferson.

Recorded at BankRoll, Mood Indigo, & Live Oak Studios, “Gangsta Knowledge” was a precursor to the upcoming LP “Coming Like Nimrod.” Both Hugh E.M.C. and DJ-X1 are recognized as pioneers in the hip-hop/rap scene, and this cassette highlights their significant roles in shaping the sound and narrative of hip-hop in the Bay Area. Their work on “Gangsta Knowledge” is a reflection of their deep connection to the culture and their ability to convey powerful messages through their music.
